The Power Of Multilayered Experiences
Many of us remember that first week of September watching PFPs in various corners of crypto Twitter turn over to glamorous, uncanny characters from a place of perpetual summer. The PFPs appear simultaneously fabricated and nostalgic, transporting us to an era that is both imagined and yet so familiar. This was of course Poolsuite’s latest release Grand Leisure, which launched into a cold market. The execution was flawless, not to mention the minting experience wholly reset the bar for community co-created NFT avatars. Yet the Grand Leisure team responded to the market’s current fragility. Aptly, they chose to freeze minting at just over a third of total supply and diverted attention into co-building the community roadmap.
In our Season 3 kick-off episode for Building At The Edges, we get an inside look at the world of Poolsuite. Poolsuite is one of those irresistible brands that’s nearly impossible to explain without experiencing it firsthand. It’s partially due to the many-layered experiences across the Poolsuite universe, including auditory, visual, digital, and physical touchpoints.
Jess and founder Marty Bell surface the story behind Poolsuite’s overnight success that was 6 years in the making. The story is a lesson in conviction, network brilliance, and killer internet brands transforming into culture. Internet brands are new vehicles to explore and express our multifaceted identities, and to run experiments with geographically-dispersed groups of people around a shared purpose.
Marty sees the potential of internet brands as an opportunity for new kinds of businesses to emerge — businesses that operate on delight and surprise, and are built in public. This comes at the intersection of dynamic value creation models, which for Poolsuite include a top-rated music streaming app, 10k PFP project, CPG brand, a DAO to buy a manor, and a lifestyle media company.
Jess and Marty toss around the emerging idea of technology optionality, referring to the yet-unrealized product creation potential within internet native orgs. This thesis begins by recognizing that DAOs will build things to solve their community’s problems. These products may ultimately go-to-market for wider industry use: think Gnosis Safe out of Gnosis and Coordinape out of Yearn. DAOs have the best understanding of their community’s problems, which is why we’re bullish on their future potential to build meaningful products, experiences, and ultimately cultures.
Marty shares the vision for Poolsuite’s future, which includes a lot more building in public with the Poolsuite community. Internet native orgs have the potential to not only be incubators for community ideas, but also subcultural hubs and, dare we say, cultural institutions. There are many pathways to get there; culture is difficult to plan for, but irresistible once it emerges.
